In this ATM, the participants will investigate properties of a Josephson junction.
After an introduction to cryogenics and the used equipment for the transport measurements, the participants will explore current-voltage (I-V) characteristics to measure the critical current as function of an out-of-plane magnetic field. The resulting Fraunhofer interference pattern will be analyzed.
In a second part, they will see that exposure to microwave radiation gives rise to steps of constant voltage in the measured I-V characteristics. The size of these so-called Shapiro steps depends only on the frequency of the applied radiation and they can serve in practice as such precise voltage standard that the current SI-definition of the unit ‘Volt’ is based on this effect.
